Selecting the Right Size Bed Linen and Bed Sheets

[ad_1]

Once you have found that perfect new mattress, the one that feels just right when you crawl into bed at night, you will naturally want to purchase something new for it, like a duvet cover or simply a fresh, new set of sheets. Even if you intend to reuse quality bedding you already have on hand, understanding mattress sizes and how they correlate to bedding can make all the difference in the finished look of a well-dressed bed.

There are many aspects to the average bed that can make or break your bed ensemble, and can help or hinder your night’s sleep. The most common decorating blunder is the overuse of throw pillows. On a small bed, too many pillows ruins the look and it is a chore on any sized bed to remove a plethora of decorations in order to use the bed. A few accent pillows are always a great way to enhance a décor, but too many and it accomplishes the opposite effect.

Another thing to consider is the actual size of your mattress. Knowing your mattress measurements is an important factor when shopping for bedding. The standard mattress sizes are as follows:

Twin: 38″ wide by 75″ long

Extra long twin: 39″ wide by 80″ long

Full/Double: 54″ wide by 75″ long

Queen: 60″ wide by 80″ long

King: 76″ wide by 80″ long

California King: 72″ wide by 84″ long

Mattress size information can be used to your advantage. Of course, buying the exact size you need will ensure that your bed sheets fit perfectly and that your duvet cover does not drag on the floor. On the other hand, if you prefer longer sheets or bigger blankets, going up a size on a selective basis may add to the comfort of the bedding.

Mattress thickness is a modern-day trouble spot for bed linen shoppers. Many of today’s mattresses sport substantial pillow tops or extended height. Shopping for bed linens that take the extra height into account is important. Look for sheets labeled “extra deep,” especially when buying fitted sheets. In addition to mattress height, when a tall mattress is paired with an equally tall box spring, the entire combination is of substantial height. Finding a dust ruffle with enough height can be tricky, but a traditional dust ruffle paired with an adjustable elastic-ring style ruffle under it can close the gap and provide an interesting decorative layered look.

Decide what you like in terms of fullness and length in your bedding and work with your bed’s measurements to achieve the comfort and style you desire.
