How to Pick the Right Mattress
I have literally helped hundreds if not thousands of people with sleep problems in my career as a Sleep Expert for almost 5 years now. I would like to help you because I know that it is sometimes hard to buy a mattress. I have found that there are certain commonalities that my customers seem to have like shoulder, hip and back pain. I would like to share tips that will help you pick a new mattress.
The spine needs to be kept straight when sleeping so if your mattress is sagging (after 5-7 years it normally is) it will misalign your spine and make it impossible to rest. When you sleep on a saggy mattress you are actually doing a balancing act all night long and this is exhausting if you work hard all day then can’t rest at night. You may or may not see a sag visually and some people get used to it. It is quite common that one person to be able to sleep O.K. on a saggy mattress when the other person on it suffers all night long.
Your pillow is 25% of your spinal alignment and you need to find a pillow that is not too tall for your neck. The trick is if you are a side sleeper the pillow should allow your neck to be straight and not tilted upward or downward as this will put strain on your neck.
Temperature is critical and about 38% of people say they wake up because they get hot and it makes them not able to get back to sleep once woken. There are many options is cool sleeping mattresses and pillows today but please remember that if your room is hot then your cool sleeping mattress or pillow will acclimate to the temperature of the room and not feel so cool. In order to maximize the cool feel you will need to keep the room cool.
Motion separation is what interrupts 22% of your deep sleep and is caused by your partner moving and waking you up not being able to get back to sleep.
When picking a mattress please remember these very important tips;
1. Do you have hip or shoulder pain? If so don’t buy too firm! You can get a firm support with a soft top in a memory foam or pocketed coil mattress. If you are a larger person try a Tempu Pedic or Beauty Rest Black. You can also tell if the mattress is too soft for you by laying on your side and pay attention to how your spine feels. A mattress that is too soft will make you feel like your hip dips down too far and is misaligning your spine.
2. Don’t buy anything without a strong comfort guarantee. You won’t know for sure if you like the mattress until you sleep on it for a while so make sure the company you buy from allows you to exchange or return and find out if there are any fees (restocking fees may be up to 30% with some companies).
The mattress will always sag in 5-10 years depending on the quality of the one you have. The sag always happens in the area from the hip to shoulder area as we carry more weight in that area. In my research, I have seen that Tempur Pedic is going to be the brand that holds up the longest and with their new Tempur breeze material it has a very nice cooling material. BUT BEWARE – not everyone likes a Tempur Pedic and Beauty Rest makes a high-quality option in their new Hybrid. Some people like the bounce of a coil mattress which provides better mobility to those who have difficulty moving.
Don’t procrastinate on your sleep as studies have shown that 70 million people in America have chronic sleep disorders and it is very harmful to your health.
Sleep is good!
